New Music: Panacea - “Flashback To Stardom” (feat. Raheem DeVaughn)

Written by Zillz™ on September 18th, 2007 in Music

Panacea are K-Murdock and Raw Poetic
“A Tribe Called Quest meets Final Fantasy” — Panacea’s Myspace

    Two of my favorite things.

Panacea is a hip-hop duo out of DC consisting of K-Murdock (Maryland) and Raw Poetic (Northern VA & Philly). Of course you know that I’m a big supporter of all hip-hop in DC, VA and NC. I’m still not ready to say hip-hop overall is in a renaissance, but Rawkus definitely in the midst of one. Panacea’s The Scenic Route is a dope record and worth the check. I remember their cd from 2006, Ink In My Drink and I thought that was phat as well. It is mentioned that they’ve been compared to legendary hip-hop groups A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, Outkast, Gangstarr and Pete Rock & CL “Make My Beats” Smooth. Which isn’t far off at all. The beats are definitely reminiscent of Outkast’s spaceship vibe and the flow will remind you of Black Thought. If you don’t agree, you’re lying. If you have similar examples, you’d still be right.

The following track can be heard on their myspace page. But I provided the mp3 because some of you are so feenin’ for fellow DC’er (?) Raheem…I see you in my blog stats!

    The Roots In Jamestown VA

Written by Zillz™ on June 1st, 2007 in Music, Politics, Society

Scooped at okayplayer.com Peep ?’s shirt. Tell The Truth About Jamestown.
?’s message was created due to a point brought up by a richmond-native Brother Manifest.

They are making the show free so it will be a maxed out turnout and the VA tourism people can say look all the black people are celebrating Jamestown. Which really they aren’t they are happy to be seeing the ROOTS for free. VA tourism then uses these numbers as data to show African American involvement in the celebration. It might not mean shit, but then you gotta think of where they having it.

The spot is a dock (intermediate Terminal ) more than likely a dock where our ancestors were taken off of slaveships and walked to Shockoe Bottom and sold. Remember Richmond VA was at one time the leading exporter of slaves.

I hope this is a good (though I will admit a very long) explaination of how things are very interesting that Virginia has you all performing at a slave dock in honor of jamestown’s anniversary which is simultaneously (though they wont talk about it) a commemoration of slavery and genocide. [ Source ]

You see, Jamestown was considered the very first permanent settlement in the history of the country. This May marked 400 years and the commonwealth has been planning this celebration for almost a year or 2. It was a VERY VERY Big Deal to the state (commonwealth). There were festivals and activities in Richmond, Colonial Williamsburg, and Jamestown. They even mowed the lawn at the Capitol! Queen Elizabeth II visited through all three cities. Richmond Mayor and former VA Governor, Douglas Wilder wasn’t in sight. Maybe he had the lowdown. It was reported that he was overseas. I didn’t participate, I’m not for celebrating a time for beginning atrocities against natives and black people. Not that The Roots were apart of any of that. In fact, when you view the vid, you’ll see ?uestlove schooling the crowd.

I appreciate Brother Manifest & ?uestlove for this. Know that there are people who view this the way you do and are wise to the games of this commonwealth and thusly we participate in activities that don’t celebrate our exploitation.
