Have you been scrolling through your iPod/iTunes/CD Collection lately feeling like somethings missing? How many more times can you blast Drake, Wayne, Nicki and Trey before you drive yourself insane, shred your clothes ala Erykah and risk the fine for some musical freedom?
Clearly, everyone in music is on hiatus or maybe they're just all getting ready for school or Christmas for the releases to begin. But, today were going to review 5 things the music game is missing. Maybe, someone will be able to come out of the studio shadows and fix this jones.
1. An R&B Supergroup
We had Destiny's Child for awhile, but Beyonce & crew dispersed amongst the paparazzi and Europe. What happened to music from groups like En Vouge, The Boyz, and Jodeci even? What music needs is a set of talented individuals, with hopefully a few cute/handsome faces amongst them we can daydream about, who can rock our world and make us feel like singing with our friends can be cool again. It may be to much to ask for some good musical substance to go with all that fun they'd be having. But, it'd be nice.
2. The Conscious Rapper
I hear Common is working on an a new relationship and Lupe is making rock music. So do we have to fill in the gap?
While Kanye is re-emerging on the scene and the egomaniac rapper/producer, witty wordplay Gemini thing is cool, what happened to the Mos Def's / Talib Kweli's of the music world? Has real lyricism and artistry retreated back to its roots underground? There is a fine balance of knowledge + lyrical content + skillz - rims-chains-money talk = a rapper we can believe in. This is the kind of person who would reject the title "Rap" and prefer to be labeled under "Hip-Hop". No Hip-Hop Dalmatians here to cause a cavity from the lyrical ear candy.
3. A Music Family (We Can Depend On)
While, Lil' Wayne and Drake and friends make for an interesting bunch. What happened to crews you loved? Think, The Refugee Camp, The Soulquarians, The Wu-Tang Clan (and associated clans), Native Tongues etc... We can't do much if your crews leader is locked up and your second in command reminds us of Eeyore and rhymes just the same. (I'm just saying). Music needs a first family of substance. Talented enough to woo the world , yet loveable like the Jacksons, and it'd be nice if they could keep out of jail and the looney bin long enough to put a few albums out and do a few tours so we can enjoy music again.
4. A Female Hip-Hop Powerhouse
According to a new report, seriously, there is a lack of female MCS and apparently, labels aren't singing female MC's because they "don't sell records". It is unfair to put all these high expectations of worthy music on
5. An R&B Crooner
These are shoes Usher, Trey Songz, Raheem Devaughn or maybe even Aaron Camper can fill. But, what we really could use is a Luther/Marvin Gaye/Donny Hathaway/Al Greene for this generation. Maybe, I'm wrong, maybe one of the above names is the IT man, but I may be wrong. It'd be nice if D'angelo came back, but we can add him to to the musical Christmas wish list right under Lauryn Hill along with the other artist you would love to hear from but may just lost faith in waiting on a return from.
This is just a short list of what we may need, hit us up and let us know if there is another element that's necessary but missing in action. We'd love to hear what you have to say.
